About 4:30 a.m. on October 25, 1929, Motorcycle Officer William Eugene Minor, 26, with five years on patrol, stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic violation at 30th Avenue North and 16th Street North. The driver had been a fugitive for roughly three weeks following a theft in Pinellas Park. After a verbal exchange, he produced a shotgun and fatally wounded the officer, then fled.
The suspect was confronted at a police roadblock and, after firing on two Clearwater officers, was killed by their return fire. Officer Minor was the fourth St. Petersburg police officer killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his mother; his wife, Mary; and his young daughter, Trudy.
