Officer James Allison Krupp, 31, with ten years on the force, was working undercover with Officer Bob Megert in an unmarked car in the 2500 block of 15th Avenue South, searching for suspects with active warrants. Unknown to them, on a separate radio channel another officer had begun pursuing a suspicious vehicle in the same area. The chase ran about fifteen minutes at speeds near 80 miles an hour. When the fleeing driver ran a stop sign, his car struck the passenger side of Krupp's unmarked vehicle, fatally injuring the officer. Officer Megert was injured but survived; the driver was charged with manslaughter.
Officer Krupp was the tenth St. Petersburg police officer killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife, Margery, and their three children: James Douglas, Brenda Jean, and Marvin David.
